He stands at 5'10", with a wiry build and only a light muscle tone, which is well hidden beneath loose clothing. He hit puberty a little early, and usually sports a light goatee or mustache, since the facial hair helps make up for him being on the small side. His skin tone is a medium tan, and his hair is dark brown color, bordering on black, that he wears in a shaggy cut. Personality: Gabe is a quiet sort who tends to fade into the background a lot. He keeps mostly to himself, and is very easy to ignore. He's not exactly shy, just not good at speaking up in normal conversations. If someone else approaches him, he's very friendly, but still not very talkative. There are very few subjects that get him going. One of these is art, and specifically photography. Gabriel loves his camera and photography, and he will talk about both of these with great (if quiet) enthusiasm. He has a quick sense of humor, and appreciates jokes and quips, even if he's not very likely to make them himself. He's an observer in most things, instead of a participant, but those who want to listen to his observations might find them quite insightful. He has occasional flashes of temper, but he tries to smother these down; he hates fighting, especially since he's easily beaten in any fight. He hates verbal fights, too, and when he does get into one, can be quite cruel, since he's usually held back his feelings until they've reached the breaking point. A day or two he's quite apologetic and miserable, and will usually be quite glad to make up on whatever the other person's terms are. He tends to be a bit of a pushover in relationships because of this, and the two he's had have ended badly, making him a bit shy of trying another. He's quiet about his sexuality, as well. He doesn't like to hide it, especially if asked openly, but it's not something he talks about or displays. The biggest indication is his comfort level around girls; he never seems to notice how attractive or unattractive a girl is. History: Isabel Martins and Marcos Santiago had met at college, in Marcos' junior year and Isabel's sophomore, while Marcos was an exchange student at the University of Pennsylvania. The two dated, and Marcos had returned to the university for his senior year as well. He asked Isabel to marry him at his graduation, and they were married by the end of his summer, Marcos staying in the U.S. with his new wife. Isabel finished her degree while Marcos landed a job as a legal counsel at a local law firm; Isabel began teaching once she graduated. The two had their first and only child in 1991, a boy they named Gabriel. Gabe, as most people called him, grew up happy enough. He was a quiet child, and always preferred crayons and crafts to sports and rougher activities. He enjoyed going outside and drawing the grass and trees even as a toddler. In school, he stayed in the background, but he got decent grades, which made his parents happy, and since he didn't seem unhappy about being part of the scenery, they never pushed him. Middle school was a confusing time for Gabe. While other boys started talking about girls in the locker room, Gabe realized quickly that he didn't care. He was more interested in the other boys, and not in the usual way of comparison. Being a quiet sort, no one ever really noticed that he didn't join in on comments in the bathroom or after classes. He didn't really realize he was gay until he was fourteen and in eighth grade. His first major crush, a boy in his year named Caleb, kissed him, and he knew then that he really wasn't interested in girls at all. They secretly dated for a few months until the end of eighth grade, when Caleb ended it with him. Gabriel was devastated, and began his high school career even more determined to stay in the background. This didn't quite work. An older boy, a junior named Peter, showed some interest in him. Though flattered, Gabriel resisted getting involved. It wasn't till partway into his sophomore year, and Peter's senior that he relented. The two started going out. It only lasted about two months before someone caught on, and exposed the two of them to the school. Peter dropped out of school almost immediately and earned his G.E.D. instead of a diploma. Gabriel didn't have that option, and while he wasn't threatened at school, it wasn't a comfortable situation anymore. The phobia against homosexuality was spreading, and every confirmed case seemed to spread the idea that it could be contagious. For his own protection, his parents decided to take Gabe out of his school and send him to Goldfinch Academy instead.
